What is the Mayoral Ball?
The Mayoral Ball is an annual premier fundraising event held on the Sunshine Coast. The invitations extend to every who’s who of the business and local community and aims to raise funds for local Sunshine Coast charities. The 2017 event was held in honour of local children’s charity, SunnyKids. The SunnyKids motto is ‘It takes a village’ and that motto could not have been more appropriate considering the effort Mask Events poured into this ball. Given the impending 50th anniversary of naming the Sunshine Coast, the pressure was on to make this ball the best one yet. (But that’s ok, we like pressure).
It’s all up in the air, the brief that caused a tailspin
Our brief was to deliver a high-end event and ticket price for 400pax with first-rate entertainment. The event was to be a class above the rest of all the other fund-raising events on the coast with an elegant environment that prospered conversations. Oh, and the venue had to be unique. Easy peasy, right? Considering there are only two proper events venues on the Sunshine Coast that can accommodate that number of people, we had a challenge on our hands. You could say, we were in for a bumpy ride. Turbulence, even?
You want to do it where?!
Given the nature of the brief, thinking outside the box was a must. The committee looked far and wide for a venue with a difference, and with our head in the clouds, we had an idea. Something that hadn’t been done before, something unique, something… fit for the best ball the coast has ever seen. After much negotiation, the committee secured McDermott Aviation’s hangar at the Sunshine Coast’s international airport. A venue of this size gave us the opportunity to start with a blank canvas. (A really really big one!) This was going to be an event to remember.
We have take off
Paint clothes on and easel at the ready, a village of helpers transformed the venue from the ground up. The once bare hanger entry was now a grand entrance that lead our guests into a luxurious dining area. With a stage and band as the backdrop and a luxurious cocktail lounge ready to set the scene on arrival, guests knew they were in for something special. With a menu designed by a celebrity chef and a cocktail bar stocked with the finest range, the scene was set for the best Mayoral Ball the coast had ever seen.
That’s the altitude! Flying High
The guests of the Mayoral ball were buzzing with delight. Fairy lights were aplenty and the Veuve was flowing into the wee hours, but nothing could compare to the unique ambience created by the planes on the tarmac in the background. The venue just added something that had never been seen before and will be remembered by guests for a lifetime. Overall, the event was a huge success, raising well beyond the targeted amount and we’re already excitedly making plans for the next one.
